What is Laser Hair Removal?

In order to get rid of unsightly hair, doctors employ a highly focused beam of light (a laser) in a process known as laser hair removal. A laser is used for hair removal because its light is absorbed by the hair’s pigment (melanin). As the light is transformed into heat, it damages the hair-growing sacs (called follicles) that are tube-shaped beneath the epidermis. Because of this damage, new hair won’t grow as quickly or at all.

Although laser hair removal effectively inhibits hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn’t result in permanent hair eradication. While all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal, those with light skin and dark hair have the most dramatic results.
